Boranup Forest is the widely recognised anchor, but private forest retreats and the Margaret River waterfall sections provide quieter alternatives with their own character. Forest locations are generally forgiving in windy weather and produce beautiful filtered light in sun, cloud, or light rain.
Boranup Forest
Boranup Forest sits 25 minutes south of Margaret River town, inside the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The forest is dominated by karri trees reaching 60 metres, creating a natural cathedral feel that no built venue can match. Best light windows are 9-11am and the 2-3 hours before golden hour, when the sun filters through the canopy at the right angle for portraits.
Boranup is one of the most weather-forgiving ceremony locations in the region. The dense canopy blocks wind well and light quality holds up in sun, cloud, and light rain. The main safety consideration is being aware of the tall trees themselves, which is one reason I liaise closely with DBCA on approved ceremony zones.
The location is managed by DBCA (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions). I hold a commercial operator’s licence with DBCA and handle all permits, fees, and paperwork so you don’t have to think about it. Access is straightforward via a small unsealed car park off Caves Road.
Best for: Couples who want to feel completely surrounded by nature. Works equally well for just-the-two-of-you elopements and small group ceremonies up to around 20 people.
Killer detail: My commercial operator’s licence with DBCA means I know exactly which forest zones are approved for ceremonies and how to keep you and your guests safe. Most photographers don’t have this. It’s the difference between a smooth day and a permit rejection.
Margaret River Waterfall and Forest Sections
Ten minutes from town, the Margaret River waterfall and surrounding forest sections offer a beautiful, easy option for couples who want a natural setting without the drive south. Best light is 9-11am or the 2-3 hours before golden hour.
Like Boranup, this location is forgiving in windy weather thanks to the sheltering forest. Parking is easy right next to the waterfall, and I handle all permits so there’s nothing for you to arrange. The waterfall itself makes a spectacular backdrop for both the ceremony and portraits afterwards.
Best for: Super simple ceremonies. Conveniently located, no long drives, minimal fuss.

Tanah Marah
Tanah Marah is a private forest venue 15 minutes from Margaret River town. It handles ceremonies from intimate elopements through to small and larger weddings, with on-site accommodation, toilets, and ample parking. The venue charges a fee (no separate permit required, the venue handles everything).
Best light is 1-2 hours before golden hour, when the sun cuts through the karri canopy and washes across the property’s paddocks. Spring, summer, and autumn are the strongest seasons.
Best for: Elopements through to larger weddings. Excellent range of photo spots on-site: lake, karri forest, and long grass paddocks that come alive at golden hour.
Killer detail: The venue has a cool extended golf buggy that ferries you from photo location to photo location. You can pile in with your esky, bridal party, and everyone else and enjoy the ride. Turns the portrait session into part of the fun.
Private Forest Retreats: Hidden Valley Forest Retreat and Harmony Forest
Both properties sit around 20 minutes from Margaret River town. Hidden Valley Forest Retreat is roughly 20 minutes; Harmony Forest about 21. Both charge venue fees only, with no separate permit paperwork required. They offer ample on-site accommodation, parking, toilets, and photo locations, meaning couples don’t have to travel off the property once they arrive.
Best light at both is 1-2 hours before golden hour. Spring, summer, and autumn are the strongest seasons for outdoor ceremonies.
Best for: Couples who want the convenience of everything happening in one place: ceremony, portraits, accommodation, dinner. No shuttling between locations.
Killer detail: Both properties get gorgeous late afternoon light that sweeps across the grounds, producing dramatic creative portraits without needing to leave the property. If you value staying put and enjoying the setting rather than driving between spots, these two are hard to beat.
Coastal Locations
The South West coastline runs from Cape Naturaliste in the north down to Cape Leeuwin at the mainland’s southernmost point. Between them sit some of Australia’s most photogenic beach and headland locations. Cape Naturaliste sites (Point Piquet, Meelup Beach, Sugarloaf Rock, Canal Rocks) fall under the City of Busselton’s jurisdiction; locations from Redgate Beach southward fall under the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River (SAMR); national park coastline sits with DBCA.
Coastal Margaret River elopement locations reward attention to season and wind. Autumn typically brings the lightest winds and softest light for portraits. Summer works but afternoon sea breezes and, at Cape Naturaliste locations, fly seasons need planning around.
Point Piquet
Point Piquet is a quiet headland between Eagle Bay and Meelup Beach on the Cape Naturaliste peninsula. From Dunsborough it’s 9 minutes; from Pullman Bunker Bay Resort, 14 minutes. From Margaret River town it’s around 55 minutes north.
Best light windows are 9-11am and the hour before golden hour, when the turquoise water lights up against the red-orange granite rocks. Any time of year can work; spring, summer, and autumn are the safest bets for consistent conditions.
Point Piquet falls under the City of Busselton, which charges a flat $100 ceremony fee for a standard 2-hour booking. Applications go through the City of Busselton’s Public Open Space booking process. There’s a free gravel car park and a public toilet on site, which makes it more logistically friendly than some raw national park spots.
Best for: Couples who want turquoise water and rugged granite as their backdrop. Point Piquet suits a dramatic landscape photography style; the location does much of the visual work.
Killer detail: Flies at Point Piquet (and across the Cape Naturaliste coast) are usually bad from late November through February, peaking in December and January. This can seriously affect your comfort and photos. If you’re planning summer, we work around this together. Meelup Beach
Meelup Beach is a sheltered turquoise bay on the Cape Naturaliste peninsula, roughly 10 minutes from Dunsborough and 45 minutes from Margaret River town. Best light windows are 9-11am and the hour before golden hour. Any time of year can work; spring, summer, and autumn are the safest bets.
Meelup falls under the City of Busselton, with a flat ceremony fee of $96 to $100 depending on the fiscal year. Your permit covers a maximum 2-hour period on the beach, which includes setup, ceremony, and any family photos on the sand. The permit is non-exclusive, meaning the public retains access to the beach, walkways, and change rooms during your slot. There’s a large parking area, toilets, and showers on site.
Best for: Elopements, micro beach weddings, and larger beach weddings up to around 40 guests.
Killer detail: Same fly warning as Point Piquet. Late November through February is peak fly season across the Cape Naturaliste coast. Plan around this if you’re aiming for summer, or lean into cooler months when conditions are cleaner.
Sugarloaf Rock
Sugarloaf Rock is a striking granite sea stack 14 minutes from Dunsborough, sitting inside the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park coastal strip. Because it’s within the national park, it falls under DBCA jurisdiction, meaning the ceremony permit fee is $0. This bypasses the City of Busselton’s council beach fees.
Best light is 100% golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, then the sunset itself, then blue hour. Autumn is the strongest season, with lighter winds and softer light that flatters portraits. Spring and summer both work; summer afternoon sea breezes can be sharp so timing matters.
There’s decent parking and easy paved access to the standard lookout, but that’s not where the magic shots happen. To reach the sweet spot where most professional wedding photographers work at Sugarloaf, you need to head down a rocky track. There are no toilets at the site itself.
Best for: Sun-flare golden hour portraits, silhouettes, and dramatic rugged rock backdrops against a wild ocean scene.
Killer detail: Please wear flat shoes on the rocky track down to the best photo location. Some brides carry a change of shoes and switch to flats or sneakers for the descent. I’ve watched too many brides attempt it in heels and it’s genuinely scary. Flats are the move. This is also why Sugarloaf works best for couples who are up for a small adventure, not couples who want everything on flat ground.
Canal Rocks
Canal Rocks is 14 minutes from Dunsborough, near Yallingup. Like Sugarloaf, it sits inside the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park coastal strip, so it falls under DBCA jurisdiction with a $0 ceremony fee. Plenty of parking and toilets at the main car park area.
Best light is golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, the sunset itself, and blue hour. Autumn is the strongest season for portraits with lighter winds and softer light. Spring and summer both work with some planning around afternoon sea breezes.
Best for: Dramatic golden hour portraits with granite channels, footbridges, and crashing waves as the backdrop.
Killer detail: Same shoe advice as Sugarloaf. To reach the best views you have to clamber over rocks. Flats or sneakers are the answer. Heels will make the walk stressful and the portrait session slower than it needs to be.
Redgate Beach
Redgate Beach sits 14 minutes from Margaret River town, along the coastline south of the town centre. Despite sitting alongside national park coastline, the main beach, car parks, and immediate coastal reserves are managed by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River (SAMR), not DBCA. The ceremony booking fee is $156, paid to SAMR. Lots of parking, toilets, and paved walkways.
Best light is golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, sunset, and blue hour. Autumn is the strongest season for the reasons already mentioned: lighter winds, softer light.
Best for: Dramatic golden hour landscape pictures. Red granite rock formations, white sand, dynamic shorelines.
Killer detail: I have every wind direction covered here except a straight westerly, which is a complete no-go for portraits with the ocean backdrop. The wind blows hair straight across the face and makes clean shots almost impossible. For every other wind direction (which is most of the year locally), I have a great sheltered spot for photos. I’ll check the forecast in the days leading up to your wedding and confirm the plan.
River Mouth Beach
River Mouth Beach is 9 minutes from Margaret River town, where the Margaret River meets the ocean at Prevelly. Best light is golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, sunset, and blue hour. The location falls under SAMR jurisdiction with a $156 ceremony fee.
Parking is available at the Surfers Point car park, with toilets on site. The beach can be busy with surfers in swell conditions, so timing your ceremony to avoid peak surf traffic (usually mid-morning) helps keep the setting quiet.
Best for: Sunset ceremonies with a dramatic ocean backdrop. The river-meets-ocean geography creates unique compositions you don’t get at straight beach locations.
Killer detail: There’s a beautiful plan B upriver spot I use when the coast is too exposed. If wind or swell make the main beach unworkable, we head 5 minutes upstream where the river bends through calm bushland with sheltered banks. Two locations, one permit, no drama.
Kilcarnup Beach
Kilcarnup Beach is around 15 minutes from Margaret River town, accessed via a 4WD-only sand track. Best light is golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, sunset, and blue hour. The beach falls under SAMR jurisdiction with a $156 ceremony fee.
The 4WD access is genuine. This is not a beach you can reach in a standard sedan. If your guests don’t have suitable vehicles, we arrange a 4WD shuttle. Once at the beach, the reward is complete privacy: Kilcarnup sees almost no foot traffic even in peak season.
Best for: Adventurous couples who want a completely private beach elopement. If you love the idea of a wild, untouched setting with genuinely no one else around, Kilcarnup is your spot.
Killer detail: The 4WD-only access is the whole point. It’s what keeps this beach quiet when Redgate and River Mouth are getting busy. I arrange 4WD transport for any guests without suitable vehicles, so you don’t need to solve the logistics.
Gracetown Beach
Gracetown Beach is around 20 minutes from Margaret River town, sitting in the small coastal town of Gracetown. Best light is golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, sunset, and blue hour. SAMR jurisdiction, $156 ceremony fee. Good parking and toilets on site.
Best for: Couples wanting a coastal ceremony without the drive south. Gracetown’s small-town feel adds a quiet, unhurried atmosphere to the day.
Killer detail: Gracetown gives you multiple photo settings within a short walk: the main beach, the jetty area, and the southern beaches accessed via a short trail. One location, multiple looks, no additional permits.
Contos Beach
Contos Beach sits 25 minutes south of Margaret River town, inside the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park coastal strip. Most of my work at this location is portraits rather than ceremonies, but the clifftop views are spectacular enough that couples occasionally choose it as a ceremony spot too.
Best light is 100% golden hour: the last 30 minutes before sunset, sunset, and blue hour. Wind exposure at Contos is high, so I only bring couples to this spot when the forecast shows light winds or calm conditions.
Holding a wedding ceremony at Contos Beach requires a permit from the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River. The non-refundable application fee is $156, and the permit grants a maximum three-hour window that includes setup and pack-down time. Access is by car and a short walking path to the clifftop viewpoint.
Best for: Couples who love dramatic clifftop sunset portraits with wide ocean views and are willing to build the day around calm wind conditions.
Killer detail: If you love this location’s aesthetic, consider a late February, March, or early April wedding date when the South West has more light-wind days. Timing your elopement to Contos-friendly weather is one of the highest-impact planning decisions you can make for this specific location.
Hamelin Bay
Hamelin Bay sits around 40 minutes south of Margaret River town, near the mouth of the Blackwood River. It’s best known for the friendly stingrays that come into the shallows year-round, a genuinely unique backdrop element for beach elopements. The location falls under SAMR with a $156 ceremony fee.

Most handle all permits and paperwork internally through their venue fee, so no separate council or DBCA application needed. Wine estates also naturally combine ceremony and reception on one site, which suits couples who want their whole day in one place.
Xanadu Wines
Xanadu Wines is around 5-8 minutes from Margaret River town, making it one of the most convenient wine estate options. Venue fees apply; no separate permit needed. Best light windows are 9-11am (for morning ceremonies in the quadrangle) and golden hour into blue hour for portraits.
Xanadu offers multiple ceremony spot options: the sheltered quadrangle for windy days, the lawn for open-sky ceremonies, and the vineyard rows for portrait sessions. Restaurant reception options make it easy to keep the whole day on site.
Best for: Couples who want a wine estate atmosphere close to town, with ceremony and reception in one place.
Killer detail: The quadrangle at Xanadu is sheltered from wind on all sides, making it a reliable plan A for exposed weather days when other outdoor locations would struggle. Voyager Estate
Voyager Estate is around 10 minutes from Margaret River town, in the Wilyabrup wine subregion. Best light windows are 9-11am for morning ceremonies or golden hour into blue hour for late afternoon. When you book Voyager for lunch, ceremony fees are generally minimal or included. Check with the venue for current specifics.
Voyager offers rose garden, forest, and lawn ceremony spots, giving flexibility across seasons and weather.

Best for: Intimate elopements with on-site accommodation for your guests. Because you’re booking the accommodation, your ceremony spot is right there. No travel, no logistics, no permits.
Killer detail: Bina Maya sits close to some of Cape Naturaliste’s best portrait locations: Sugarloaf Rock, Canal Rocks, Bunker Bay, and Shelley Cove are all within a short drive. You can hold your ceremony at Bina Maya, then head to one of those coastal spots for portraits without adding travel stress to the day.
Hidden Local Spots
Riverside Forest Deck (Margaret River)
This is a spot I’ve scouted and used for years, a quiet decked area with the Margaret River as backdrop, tucked into surrounding forest. It sits along the scenic public river banks, which fall under SAMR jurisdiction with a $156 ceremony fee. Ample parking and toilets nearby.
Best light windows are 9-11am or the 2-3 hours before golden hour. The exact location is one I share with my couples once we’ve had a chat about your vision. This keeps it quiet and unbranded, which is the whole point of picking it in the first place.
Best for: Super simple ceremonies conveniently located 10 minutes from town, with a natural backdrop that photographs beautifully.
Killer detail: This location combines the ease of an in-town ceremony with the natural feel of a forest setting: decked area with Margaret River flowing behind and karri forest around. Because it’s not on any venue directory, you won’t get the “we saw this on ten other elopement blogs” feeling.
Private Property and Accommodation Weddings
Beyond the named venues and public locations, private property and accommodation weddings offer complete flexibility. Booking an AirBnB, Exclusive Escapes property, or private rural property can give you an entire estate to yourselves for the day, with ceremony and reception in one place.
What to look for in a property: Nice interior light and space for a potential first look, portraits, or group pictures. Garden areas with green shrubs, mature trees, or forest surrounds photograph beautifully. Kitchens with a full oven and stove matter if you’re planning a private chef dinner. A microwave will not cut it.

Location strategy: Choose accommodation close to your ceremony location. If you’re getting married in Boranup Forest, book accommodation around Margaret River town. If you’re eloping at Meelup Beach or Point Piquet, book around Dunsborough. Short travel times on the wedding morning reduce stress and give you more time actually enjoying the day.
