Here’s something most couples don’t realise. The main beach at Gnarabup is popular for good reason, but on a warm day it fills up fast. Sunbathers, swimmers, a steady line of people heading out on paddleboards. Lovely if you’re there for a swim. Not what you want in the background as you say your vows.
The good news is that the main beach is not your only option. Tucked along this stretch of coast are several smaller, more secluded beaches, completely separate from the busy main patch. Your ceremony permit comes from the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River. When I plan your day, I sort this for you and build the timeline around it.
For the light, I usually aim your ceremony for late afternoon, somewhere around 4:30 pm depending on the season. The sun is softer then, the heat has dropped, and everyone’s relaxed.
A Word on the Weather
Beach weddings and weather go hand in hand, so I always plan for a Plan B. Summer showers here tend to blow through fast, and having a sheltered fallback sorted in advance means a change in the sky never becomes a change in the mood. We talk this through early so you’re never caught out.
Seasonal Considerations
Summer, November through April, gives you reliable sun and long golden evenings. It’s also peak season, so book well ahead.
Personally, I love a spring or autumn wedding at Gnarabup. Think September to November, or March to May. The weather is mild, the beach is quieter, and the light is at its best.

Gnarabup sits just 10 minutes from Margaret River town, which gives you a secluded beach without the long drive. Accommodation is close by, and there’s plenty of parking.
A group wine tour the day before is a fun way to kick things off. For accommodation, book early, especially over summer.
My top photography tip? Think about a “first look” before the ceremony. The light is gorgeous, your hair and makeup are fresh, and you’ll have far more time to enjoy the party afterwards.
